This coffee comes from the Meru region, on the eastern side of Mount Kenya, where high altitude, cool climate, and rich volcanic soils make for some of the most distinctive and expressive coffees in East Africa.
Kenya’s coffee system is unique. Most coffees are sold through a government-run auction in Nairobi, held weekly. Producers submit their lots, and exporters bid — so green coffee isn’t typically bought directly from farms or co-ops, but selected through this auction process. This Masai lot was sourced by Josra Coffee, a family-owned exporter established in 1988 by Joshua G. Ngeera and Rachel N. Gichoga. They grew up on coffee farms themselves, and started Josra with the goal of getting locally grown coffees directly into the hands of international roasters. They’re now one of the few remaining Kenyan-owned exporters, known for consistently sourcing top-grade, traceable coffees.
This is a washed selection of SL28 and Ruiru 11, grown at around 1,850 meters altitude. The cherries are traditionally washed using clean mountain water and dried slowly. Two harvests take place in Kenya: the main one from April to November, and a smaller one from December to July. This lot comes from the main season.
Masai coffees take their name from the Maasai people, an ethnic group native to the region between Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro. The name Masai translates to “close to heaven”, which says something about the altitude — and perhaps the elegance of the coffees, too.
