This coffee comes from the Meru region, on the eastern slopes of Mount Kenya. Grown at high altitudes in volcanic soil under cool, tropical conditions, it’s a place well-suited to slow, dense cherry development — and known for producing some of Kenya’s most balanced and expressive coffees.

Kenya’s coffee trade is structured differently from many producing countries. Most lots are sold through a government-run auction in Nairobi, where exporters like Josra Coffee select the coffees they want to offer. Josra is a family-run exporter founded in 1988 by Joshua G. Ngeera and Rachel N. Gichoga — both of whom grew up on coffee farms and started the business with a mission to get quality Kenyan coffees directly into the hands of roasters. Today, they’re one of the few locally owned exporters still operating, known for sourcing clean, consistent, and high-quality lots.

This particular coffee is a washed lot made up of SL28, SL34, and Batian, all grown at around 1,600 - 2100 meters. After harvest, the cherries are sorted, pulped, washed with clean mountain water, and dried slowly on raised beds.

There are two harvests in Kenya — the main season from April to November, and a smaller secondary harvest from December to July. This coffee comes from the main harvest, when volume and quality typically peak.
