This AA lot of SL28, Ruiru 11 from Karimikui AA coffee, is cultivated in Kirinyaga County, situated at the country's core, roughly 112 km northeast of Nairobi, the capital. This coffee thrives on the fertile volcanic slopes of eastern Mount Kenya, at elevations between 1,700 and 1,900 meters above sea level, receiving abundant rainfall ideal for coffee cultivation. Similar to the neighbouring region of Nyeri, Kirinyaga is renowned for its superior coffee.

Kenya annually produces about 750,000 bags of coffee, relying heavily on smallholder farmers. The average farm size in Kenya is 1-2 hectares, with many farmers tending as few as 150 coffee trees. These smallholders transport their coffee cherries to centralised mills, where the cherries are weighed, sorted, and combined to form larger lots suitable for processing and export.

Established in the late 1950s, the Karimikui Coffee Factory is part of the Rung’eto Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS). The cooperative is based in Ngariama, within the Gichugu Division of Kirinyaga East District, on Mount Kenya's southern slopes.
